11 Mar In demand: coordinator and advisor expertise
11 March 2019
Coordinator and Advisor level candidates (including Executives, Specialists and Consultants) are in high demand with a wealth of opportunities available to them.
Usually with two – five years’ experience, these candidates are adept in managing end-to-end business development (BD) initiatives, including pitching, events, directory submissions, marketing collateral, sponsorships and profiling. Having developed strong relationships with fee earners, candidates at this level can be responsible for driving BD strategy with partners.
Increase in demand fueling turnover and salary rises
With this increased demand comes a rise in salary expectations, career opportunities and role responsibilities. This facilitates continual turnover and sharp increases in average salary levels, to the point where BD Advisors can be earning more than their equivalent fee earners.
BD Advisors are also using these opportunities to gain experience in other industries, such as accounting, financial services, education, engineering, property and consulting, with some returning to legal.
Drivers of change
- Transferrable skills such as pitching, writing, stakeholder management, marketing and analysis allow BD Advisors to easily transition into other industries
- Top-tier and global firms are poaching candidates from other firms
- High turnover leads to increased choice for other candidates at this level
- High-pressure environments and limited opportunities for direct progression to Manager are also contributing to turnover.
